I was informed today of something that is a little disturbing and made me stop and think about what I really believe and how I really feel. HBO reportedly advertised in TV Guide for an episode of "Big Love" that delves into the sacred events of temple ceremonies of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I have seen a number of news articles and blogs that talk a lot about what the show and specifically that episode is about. While there is some controversy and a significant lack of respect in what would be covered in the episode, instead of focusing on the negative I'd like to share some of my feelings about the sacredness of the temple and its ceremonies.
As an active Latter-day Saint, or Mormon, I have been to the temple many times and strive to live worthily to continue to visit it according to the guidelines the Church has set. I love to go to the temple to experience the peace and joy of being in a place where everyone there is striving to live according to the gospel of Jesus Christ. When I go to the temple I can escape from the weight of the world and my day to day worries. It is a place where I can focus on promises I've made to live a better life and where I can feel closer to my saviour and to my father in heaven.
I want to echo what many others have said over the years in that, it is not so much that the events inside the temple are secret, they are sacred to those who go and take part in them. They are something to be remembered and contemplated in one's heart and mind. There is much to be learned for those who seek the Lord's help in understanding the meaning and symbolism found in the temple.
Instead of turning to the sensationalism and hype of misinformed or misrepresentative tv shows or other media, try asking someone who lives the life of a Latter-day Saint. Try learning about the Mormons from the source. http://www.mormon.org is a great place to start. We have missionaries that are waiting to explain more about who we are and what we believe. That's what they do.
I love the gospel of Jesus Christ and am very grateful for the love and joy it has brought into my life. I am thankful for my Saviour's sacrifice in atoning for my sins and mistakes so I can improve, feel clean again, and eventually return to live with my Heavenly Father after this life.
As a side note, the TV Guide link that was reported to have the information about the show has been taken down and the HBO website has no reference that I could find about the show. Perhaps they have wisely pulled the show. I think most people really do want to do good things. Perhaps they have chosen to respect the desire of millions of members of the Church worldwide tokeep the events of the temple sacred.
