Mechanically Incompetent? I think not!

June 7, 2009, 11:39 pm - James Farrer

A little bit of history: Some time last year the check engine light came on in our truck. We got the error code read and it was the EGR valve. Quote to fix it: $600-800. Ouch! Good news was that it wasn't a rush to get it fixed and my father-in-law or brother-in-law could fix it...IF we could get them and the truck in the same state long enough to actually look at it.

To make a long story short, it hasn't happened.

So a few weeks ago I went out and tried my best to locate the part and see if I could get at it enough to replace it, only to come back in with a statement that I was completely and totally mechanically incompetent.

But, lest you think I would give up that easy, I finally found my repair manual and tried again last week. Success! With a few phone calls for clarification, a quick trip to the parts store for some gasket and filter material, a used mascara brush, and a few bumps and bruises I successfully pulled the EGR valve off, located the troublesome spot, cleaned it out (hence the mascara brush) and viola! We're back in business. Yes folks, factoring in the pro-rated cost of the mascara and other parts I saved myself $590-790. How's that for a pat on the back and proof that I am not completely incompetent when it come to motor vehicle maintenance.

Now if only I can figure that other doohicky thingy-mabob...

My kids are the coolest!

June 2, 2009, 10:50 pm - James Farrer

The final word is in, the contest is over! My kids are the cutest!

My youngest has been eating my arm while my other two kids are sleeping. Oh, did I mention that was round three? For round one he was getting to know his hands, by sight, feel, and taste. Round 2 was his toes by the same methods. Go figure.

My oldest boy was awesome today, he went over to our shelf with all of our movies on it, pointed to Disney's Cars and said "Vrooooom". He has watched Chitty Bang Bang at least once every day in the last week or two because it has cars in it and he usually takes a collection of Hot Wheels to bed with him. And then there's the Tonka trucks that he drives at running speed through the house with amazing precision steering. He is all boy! It's been amazing to see how he picked up cars and Abby picked up dancing, dolls, and other girly things from very young with little encouragement either for or against any of those things.

Abby has been dancing, singing, and coloring lot's lately. Today when I got home from work she had to sing me all of the songs that she has been learning from her computer-tutor pre-school program. She even sang some of them twice.

Then I stop and think, how'd I get to have three kids already? I swear I'm old enough to have three, but the EFY kids tromping around campus do look awefully young these days.
